Maintaining Drums with Drum Liners

About Me
shipping fragile collectibles

Some of the most difficult things to ship are made of glass. When I inherited most of the contents of my grandmother's house, I decided to sell the collectibles that were stored throughout. It was a difficult decision for me to make, not because of the sentimental value of these things, but because I was worried about how I would ship the stuff without it getting broken. Fortunately, I learned a lot about shipping these fragile items and have included much of what I learned here on my blog. You will find that it is possible to ship fragile items without any worries about it getting broken.

Maintaining Drums with Drum Liners

A metal or plastic drum that has been left open is prone to bacterial accumulation. Even with the use of a lid, cross-contamination is possible if dirty substances are on the rim of the lid and the barrel and come into contact with one another. Before preparing a batch of solid or liquid ingredients, add a fluted or non-fluted drum liner to each container that will be transported from your company's point of origin.

Liner Materials and Styles

Drums that are used in industrial settings may be used to hold consumables, chemicals, and raw materials necessary for industrial manufacturing purposes. A 55-gallon drum that is filled with liquids or solids may require a sterilization cleaning process, once a drum has been emptied.

With the addition of an LDPE or aluminum liner, a disinfecting session isn't critical. LDPE is a plastic product that is moisture resistant and that can be used to transport products that will eventually be consumed. Aluminum liners will form a barrier that will prevent sunlight or air from affecting the quality of goods.

A drum liner may contain a fluted design or one that is smooth and seamless. There are liner types that will expand after they are dropped into a container and ones that provide dual access. A dual access liner may be preferred if a drum style contains a top and bottom spigot and a liquid or dry product will be dispensed from either side of a container.

With a bag that contains dual openings, each opening should align with the style of a drum. The lipped edges of each opening can be secured around the top of a barrel or the spigot that rests on the container's underside. Some liners will need to be tied. This type of liner is better suited for dry goods and will have a cinch top or flap closures, which can be used to secure a liner.

Usage for Onsite Applications

You may rely upon cardboard cartons, storage shelves, and large open bins when storing raw materials. To aid in uniformity and to cut back on the number of times that raw materials need to be transferred to different containers, use drum liners onsite.

Designate a series of drums that will be used solely on the premises. Add one liner to each one. Label the outside of the drums, with the name of the material that should be stored in each one. Recyclables, hardware, waste materials, fabrics, and metal components are some items that can be placed inside of each onsite drum that contains a liner.
